More about Aled Williams

"A surprising proportion of mathematicians are accomplished musicians. Is it because music and mathematics share patterns that are beautiful?" (Martin Gardner)

I have always been fascinated by mathematics but it is not my only passion. Given the quote above, it may be unsurprising to learn that music is another huge part of my life. From first picking up a clarinet at the age of seven to completing an undergraduate degree in maths and music, music will always be important to me.

Over the years I have had the opportunity to perform with several fantastic musicians and I really hope this continues. During my time in Birmingham, I was fortunate enough to perform with the following groups:

  • University of Birmingham Wind Band (2012-2017)

  • University of Birmingham Saxophone Ensemble (2012-2017)

  • Summer Festival Big Band (2012-2015)

  • Second City Sax (2013-2017)

A particular highlight during my time playing with Second City Sax, which is a saxophone quartet from the West Midlands, occurred in 2017. We were fortunate enough to work with the composer Steve Marlow to rehearse and develop a new composition entitled Suite for Saxophone Quartet.

I have continued my musical journey while working on my PhD, with membership of the following ensembles:

  • Cardiff University Big Band (2017-2018)

  • Cardiff University Saxophone Ensemble (2017-2018)

  • City of Cardiff Concert Band (2017-2018)

  • South London Jazz Orchestra (2018-2019)

  • KCL Gilbert and Sullivan Orchestra - Trial by Jury and HMS Pinafore (2018)

  • KCL Gilbert and Sullivan Orchestra - Princess Ida (2019)

  • The Heroes Band (2020-present)

While playing with the Cardiff University Big Band, we were lucky enough to reach the semi-finals of the national televised competition, Band Cymru, for the first time. It was a huge honour to represent both the big band and the university at such a prestigious event. Our performance is available on YouTube.
